When I meditated on this passage from Joshua 15:18–19
(18. And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?
19. Who answered, Give me a blessing for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.)
The Lord opened my eyes to something deeply beautiful. Achsah comes to her father Caleb and gently reminds him, “You have already given me land in the Negev—but it is dry. Now give me springs of water.” ( Give me a blessing ).This simple request carries a great spiritual truth for our lives.
Firstly , Achsah boldly approached her father to give her the blessing she needed because she knew she had the right to ask. In the same way, we too can come confidently before our Heavenly Father. We are His sons and daughters (Romans 8:15), and because of that relationship, we have the freedom to say, “Lord, give me a blessing.” Just as Jacob clung to God saying, “I will not let You go unless You bless me” (Genesis 32:26), and as Moses pleaded, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here” (Exodus 33:15), we too can approach the Lord with boldness, calling Him our Father and asking for His blessing.
Achsah also teaches us that we can bring our dry places to God. She did not hide her need—she openly said, “You have given me dry land, but I need springs of water.” Likewise, we can come to God and say, “Lord, my life feels dry. My strength feels empty. Pour out Your Spirit upon me.” Just as Jesus calls Himself the Living Water (John 4:14), God desires to refresh every dry and weary area of our hearts. Caleb already knew what kind of land he had given Achsah, yet he still wanted her to ask. In the same way, God knows our struggles, but He delights in hearing our voice and our dependence on Him (Philippians 4:6).
And the most beautiful part of this passage? Achsah received exactly what she asked for. The Bible says that Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs (Joshua 15:19). She walked away with no disappointment, fully satisfied by her father’s generosity. The same assurance is ours today. Jesus Himself said that if earthly fathers know how to give good gifts, how much more will our Heavenly Father give good things to those who ask Him (Matthew 7:11).
So today, take courage and approach the throne of grace. Bring your needs, your dryness, your desires, and your hopes before the Father. Say with faith, “Lord, give me a blessing,” and trust that you will not return empty. Your Father delights in giving you springs of living water—more than you ask, more than you imagine, and more than you deserve.
